Sarcasm aside, the Mets did what they SHOULD have been doing to many of the weak teams they faced. Trouncing 'em in the hallways, taking the entire opposing team's lunch money and then splurging the found booty on a white elephant item.
The right guys were putting up the numbers and hopefully this will continue.
Oh, and I tried to listen, but couldn't hear Paul LoDuca repeat his comment after he left the Mets and went to the Nationals. It was akin to "I can't wait to face the Mets! We'll see them 14 times in '08!" Pssssst. Someone just tapped me on the shoulder and whispered that Paul LoDuca was cut a few weeks ago. OH WELL!
Now, we have to do some more decisive winning against the DC and PITT teams in the coming days. If Philly waivers, first is a grain of salt away.

Mets' Youth is Answer to Their Woes

I'm taking a day off from writing today (can't stomach it after seeing the Mets pen give up 6 runs today to the lowly Pirates). I dispatched a long time business colleague and fellow Mets fan to utter some logic in this time of bullpen confusion.

Okay, so the Mets didn't sweep the Marlins on Sunday. [Editors Note: Nor did they play up to the level of the Sisters of Charity "B" team against the Pirates on Monday in a make-up game].
We have to give Josh Johnson a lot of credit. He is a big time pitcher although he's still relatively inexperienced. It's a waste of time to analyze Pelfrey's performance since the Mets' bats did nothing to keep pace with the offensively-charged Marlins.
Going back to Game 2 of this series, Murphy and Evans were nothing short of awesome. It is always exciting to see our young talent get called up in August and September every season. Two years ago, Mike Jacobs hit 10 HRs in something like his first 100 ABs. He's a jerk anyway, especially with what he did to Brian Stokes who got his first major league hit in as many ABs -- Jacobs tossed the ball over the Mets dugout and into the stands. Delgado and Mets officials needed to act fast to get the ball back. This was no accident -- the Marlins team was angered by a stong start by the Mets in which they scored four runs in the first inning.
Anyway, back to the young Mets talent. Another minor leaguer who has been getting some blog buzz is Valentino Pascucci who has hit 25 HRs this season for the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA).
Val Pascucci should be starting in LF for the Mets. Evans should split time with Tatis in RF and Daniel Murphy should be starting every game for the Mets at second base (he played 3B in the minors and should be able to make the switch) while Castillo continues his rehab. I don't want to ever see Damion Easley start a game for the Mets. He should always be used for PH.
Here is what the Mets lineup needs to look like if they are to challenge the Phillies and take the NL East:

As for Nick Evans, he started slow batting .179 on July 12, but has been on a hot streak and is now hitting at a healthy .263.

Box Score
What a bad day to spend an afternoon watching the Mets get trounced by the Marlins. The only consolation that came from this is that Hanley Ramirez went 0-for-5.
Pelfrey was off and walked everyone. In fact, people were foregoing trips to Lourdes because they saw they may have a chance at walking if they faced Pelfrey. I'm selfishly mad because I picked him as a spot starter in my fantasy league and he hurt my ERA and WHIP.
Serves me right.
Makeup game against the Pyrites tomorrow. Next few must all be wins as we are facing "tomato cans."

Some Candid Insight from a Pitcher I Was Not Too Fond Of...
Listening to the radio today on WFAN, and John Franco was on. Now, for those who know me, I am not a fan of his as a pitcher and thought he was way overrated. Blew too many easy games too.
In any sense, he waxed philosophical and candid about the 2008 Mets. He stated the team does not have a true leader, a stand up guy who can rally everyone and spark the team. He thinks David Wright could be the one, but at 25, may be too young and won't have the respect of older players. Franco, I agree.
Another point he made...
I am paraphrasing his quote, but it was along the lines of, "I don't think the Mets show up to play hard every day. You would think that after what happened last year, they would be consistently hungry. Against teams with bad records like the Astros and Padres, they come in with a mighty attitude and they aren't dominating, so they play a less casual game."
Franco, you may not have hit the strike zone from 60'6" at the right time, but this is an accurate call.
And, another thing, the schedule coming up is soft. After the Marlins series, 8 games against the Pirates and the Nationals...Lord help me if they go worse than 7-1.

Ollie was dead on tonight and nary a shaky performance. He still gives up a lot of walks, so if you are in a fantasy league, your WHIP goes up without fail.

Can you believe the guy who mars all the win Opps for Johan Santana actually stepped in and got the win today in a see saw of a game. Aaron Heilman who should be on Waivers....Pssst. Mets - you missed the boat with Chad Bradford who just got picked up by the Devil Rays...and Livan Hernandez too! Why not put Aaron on the wire and see who bites? Think of it as putting out junk at the garages sale.

Aaron Heilman -- Is he For REAL?
Another "fasten your seat belt" performance from Aaron "Enola Gay" Heilman. Gees, he keeps dropping these bombs and rattling the hell out of us fans.
Mets were up by a good 6-2 margin when Mr. GiveItUp, well, gave up a 3 run king kong to the world famous Jody Gerut (Box Score).
It is just baffling beyond the permissible pale of comprehension how a team keeps putting out the bait for hitters to hit. Heilman is just bad. He gave up a surprisingly low 9 HRs this year -- last two were a 3 and 4 run numbers.
Each day, the Mets pitching staff seems to erode like a glacier in Hades. Maine. Wagner. Away. Heilman (should be put away) and Duaner "Hey Taxi" Sanchez is not Ole Reliable.
I'm tired of sounding like an old washerwoman, but this pitching is just bad. I can remember in the early 90s when the Mets just reeked of solid starters.
OK Omar, dig up some goodies from the minors or work the wavier wire...
NOTES: Seems like some of the position rookies are doing well. There are less of them than last year, but Nick Evans and Dan Murphy and pitcher, Eddie Kunz are nice surprises. Let's cultivate them and not burn em out.
And, a special shout out for Fernando Tatis...GO GET EM AGAIN, EffTee!

3 Game series coming up with the woeful Padres who beat the woeful Mets in a sweep earlier this year.
Ironically, we should all be praying to the padres before the Padres prey on the Mets.
A lot of weak arms in the hurling ranks...Duaner, Billy, Maine...
On the other side, the Phils and the Marlins are going to rock it out. Let's hope for a mathematical luck. A sweep with the Mets to gain 1 1/2 and the other two to lose...

Stros Pull Another W Away from the Mets
Baffled. Plain Baffled is all I can say about the loss today: Box Score
Mets kept leaving men on base and the Houston Astros were able to capitalize and have a 4-0 easy walkover win. We are not fighting hard and this is war. Especially when the Fish and Phils are close to first as well.
Day off on Monday. Typical Wash Day as they used to say. Let's hope we wash out the Ls and fold and hang some Ws.
Maine is on the DL, Wagner is hurt...Oh, get this. He says he felt this way since the Florida Series...Thanks Billy. Secrets like these are not welcome.

Wagner. Heilman. Reminds Me of John Franco Blowing Games...
The first 8 innings of tonight's game were great. Not much to chirp about. Santana was pitching well and held the fort down - but alas, he doesn't collect a W. Start sending the "Thank You" Notes to Billy Wagner and Aaron Heilman.
Wagner had every opp and reason to beat his old team, but for some odd reason, kept letting batters from the 'Stros reach base. And, alas, they tie it. Not a line item in the job description of a closer. Worse yet, Heilman comes in the 10th and gives the game away.
Take a close look at the box score, especially the men left on base (LOB). Mets have a baker's dozen - which is bad, but the 'Stros have a quarter of a century -- and they STILL win.
A friend of mine commented to me after the game, "Wagner got a free pass...Heilman needs to go to triple A." I agree, but I would send Heilman to another team and let them deal with it.

Bats In The Pelfrey
Lame title. Don't throw rotten fruit. Just throw fastballs to the opponent with a sprinkle of sliders, curves, etc.
So, a W got away from the Mets tonight and it looked like they ALMOST were going to mount a comeback in the 9th. Then the ether wore off and the Marlins were high-fiving each other.
Pelfrey pitched OK early on, but then couldn't keep the lead. He's finding his groove and a loss is expected now and then.
Phillies winning and Mets losing is not a good combination. As Ralph Kramden said, "natural enemies--like a boa constrictor and a mongoose."
This is the eve of the trade deadline...the Yankees fleeced another team by trading I-Rod for Kyle Farnsworth. Hey Detroit...what are you thinking?...And, I pray that the Red Sox dump Manny Ramirez to -- to -- anywhere BUT the Mets. He gives baseball a bad name. Perhaps an independent league in need of a mascot?

Fish Got REEL Good
Emotional see-saw for tonight's game. I am not feeling chipper enough to offer a pithy (or pissy) analysis. But, I do want to say that Fernando Tatis is an unheralded hero to this team.
In the coming days, I have an idea for a blog which I will explore a bit, so dear reader (I am assuming one other person besides me reads this. Would love for it to be plural, so friend, help me out and tell another friend about this blog).
A question mark is probably over the head of John Maine as he left the game with some tightness. Let's hope its minor. Quick L tonight, lick the wounds...

Interesting Note...So, I see that Hanley Ramirez, who was taken within the first 5 players amongst us Fantasy League types, has an odd stat. 24 Slams over the Wall, but only 47 RBI. Yes, he's a leadoff guy, but still, that seems delgado (er, Spanish for Skinny).
MALCONTENT ALERT -- Playing Major League ball is the dream of millions of kids (and probably ten times as many adults), but you have every now and then, someone who had to be beat with a monkeywrench as a child. In this case, I am talking about the soon-to-be-Ex-Red Sox, Manny Ramirez. No player in baseball has been tagged more loony than him. This dude definitely has toys in the attic. His latest remark of (paraphrased) I'm tired of the Red Sox and they are tired of me" is absolutely asinine. Manny, stay away from the Mets. We don't want your antics. Matter of fact, this wanna-be-MLBer-scribe says leave the game, immediately and give some chap in Triple-A a chance to get to the bigs. We are wise to your game and you cried WOLF (not Randy Wolf) too many times. To quote Clubber Lang of Rocky fame, "I pity the fools who pick him up next..."

Johan - Simply Complete
So, today I was one of a couple of thousand people in the seats at Shea and all I have to say is if you weren't there today, you missed a thriller.
Santana was just perfect. Had a no-no going for several innings despite few strikeouts. Every player on the team came out of the game with a hit and the starting 9 was the finishing 9.

Tatis kept whacking the ball. Santana delivered two hits, had an RBI and the first complete game of the year for the Mets. Complete games are rare. In fact, I think this is the first one I have been to in....well, since Hector Was a Pup.
And, the WOW play of the game was Beltran's amazing catch robbing the Cardinals of a Home Run.

Battling Back
Mets are showing resiliency tonight going toe-to-toe with the Cardinals. I have a funny feeling it will end as a 1-run game.

Looks Like the Mets Beat The Vatican Cardinals
A few weeks ago, Carlos Delgado was a Pariah in the House. An anemic .203 average (give or take- but let's be realistic and take - .201), bad fielding and just no production mixed in with Ks (forward AND backward ones). But, today is July 25 and Delgado had a hell of a month and could realistically be named Player of the Month. A solid HR - his 20th was amongst the highlights of the Mets W over the St. Louis Cardinals (Box Score). OH, but wait, there's more..
Mike Pelfrey, whom I was ready to give away for a bucket of practice balls and a fungo bat and maybe even a used batting glove (for reference, see most posts of 2007! :) ) has come into his own. The confidence is there and the batters are taking him seriously. 7 Solid innings and over his last few starts, his ERA is 2.57. That's what it USED to be after 1/3 inning!
The one area where I still get a little trepidation is that 8th inning...Duaner (HEY TAXI) Sanchez has a predisposition to put runners on. Heilman, is like, well, John Kerry. Flip-flop on whether the mound time will be good or bad.
Cardinals look beatable. In fact, Albert Pujols, arguably the best all-around player (Here's where I have to tout Jose Reyes with his triples) looked like he was an 80-year-old Cardinal from Vatican City. 0-for-5 with 3Ks. Time to light a candle. Santana goes on Sunday and my ass will be planted in the stadium. GO METS!
In the Who Gives a Rat's Ass Dept...So, the following article appears on MLB.Com "Hampton slated to make return Saturday" The sub-head says it all - He hasn't pitched in 3 years in the majors. What is so special about this guy? I thought he left the Mets for the Rockies because they had a better school system? What's he then doing in Atlanta? Why? Why? Why? A very good friend of mine who happens to reside in the same state where Hampton's employer is, summed it up. Take it away O.H. "Hampton is pitching tomorrow if he doesn't pull a muscle wiping his ass in the morning." Sadly, he's accurate. Hampton is as fragile as origami. He put many young pitcher's careers in the shredder waiting for his spot. My prediction? He will make Micah Owings recent outings look like Sandy Koufax in the early 60s.

First PLACE! How Do You Spell Oliver Perez? K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K-K
The following prognostications, taken singly, would have put anyone in the loony bin had they been evoked in May:
- The Mets are in first place
- Oliver Perez will be consistent
- Carlos Delgado will hit - AND be the catalyst to the Mets getting in first place
OK all ye (me included) Oracle consultors, all three are true. We are not in the loony bin, but in first place. It took an afternoon delight and a win over the Phils to get there.
But, Hey, I'm happy. A good sign is that Delgado, whom I put on a train to New Orleans -- or anywhere for that matter -- early this season, is now hitting and in clutch situations. Let's just hope the early mishaps were seasonal slumps.
Now we are in first. As the John Bon Jovi lyrics state in Livin on a Prayer:

It All Comes Together -- and !Voila! - A win!
Good contest tonight against the Phillies. The bonehead plays were sequestered away (for good I hope) and the Mets plowed through a W. It was a nice gesture for Bret Myers to load the bases and give us a free run in the first inning. Box Score...
The highlight was the sweet swing HR by Jose Reyes. The more he hits, the more the Mets hustle.
Now, for a good sign - Wagner pitching good despite the issue with his arm the other day.
Tomorrow, a day game - 12 noon. Unfortunately, I cannot go to the game due to work obligations, but will be sneaking a listen on the radio.

BA-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A....no...more like BOOOOOOOOO
OK. See the picture at the left? Now its time to match the image with the situation of the July 22 Mets game where they imploded in the last inning to the Phillies. After "securing" a 5-2 lead, all that was needed was 3 cheap outs.With Wagner out, Duaner (HEY TAXI) Sanchez was called in for closing duties. Instead, it looks like the same Taxi came by and prevented the door from being shut on the Phillies.
So, now it's time to test your prowess...
A. Carlos Beltran for lazily strolling to two bloop-like flies in the 9th.
B. Duaner Sanchez for Loading em up
C. Jose Reyes for allowing an infield hit and not stepping on the bag with bases loaded

Let The Games Begin
No. I am NOT talking about the Olympics (but on a selfish, side note, I can't WAIT to see the track and field).
The games I am talking about take on more of a Herculean proportion as the Mets and Phils square off. With both teams jockeying for first, this will be more of mental test than physical but whoever scores the most runs, against their opponent will win. The trick is to combine the two and tune out the negative.
Both teams have had their fair share of Ws and Ls. Can our young pitchers beat their old timers? Will our old timers be able to face their young arms? The likes of Hamels scares me a bit.
They say that phrase occasionally, "Tomorrow is another day" if they only KNEW...

In The Red
A good game, for sure today. A lot of nerve wracking, but the contest was decided so well in the last innings. Robinson Cancel had his - yes, you are reading this correctly - his first extra base hit since 1999, and after the hustle and the insurance runs in the ends, I feel like partying like its 1999.
Kudos to Jose Reyes for recording his 63rd Career triple with the Mets and that put him in first on the all time list. While I don't have the stats in front of me, I'm sure he got to most of the milestone numbers before any of the other Mets.
Wagner was simply lights out. 3Ks. What more can one ask from a closer?
Back tomorrow. We are commandeering the lead against the team 90 or so miles south of Shea.

HEY! Bad Looking! What Were You Thinking? - and other Foibles of the Night
The Reds are not what you would call Red Hot -- Unless you have only seen the last two games against the Mets.
I'm going to be short and sweet here (oh, by the way, the title of this blog is supposed to be a lame take off of the great Hank Williams hit: Hey Good Lookin' (Whatcha Got Cookin...).
Beltran was horrendous on the two flies hit his way. Even the Russian judge would have given him a 9.9 for performance. And the deal with Beltran AND Wright looking at a 3-2 pitch from the never heralded Mike Lincoln, who, in my opinion, looked more formidable than Honest Abe Lincoln.
Lets dust em off and get tomorrow. Good thing the Phils lost, so there IS a race going on.

A Loss? Man, that is rare
So, the Mets tallied an L for the first time since the Grover Cleveland administration (the first term, not the second). And it was bound to happen. But the feeling from this round corner is that it is no big deal...Maine wasn't himself, and from what stat has been bandied about post game, he has gone only 19 innings in the last 4 starts. Not great, but starting pitching needs to come around and go 7. I promise not to go postal here with pitch counts, etc.
A little bit better execution could have happened. Beltran legged out a valiant triple to lead off the inning and no one could get him the fare to travel 90 feet that inning. This is the type of plays that win or lose ball games. I believe the word I am searching for is "decisive."
Pedro's start has been pushed back and El Duque didn't exactly wow them in his rehab, so we must be on guard here.

10 in a Row. Ten in a Rau. It all sounds the same -- GOOD.
Mets are now EARNING their wins with some hard fought come from behind victories and not laying down when an opponent has crossed the plate more than they have.
Santana pitched so-so, but the lesson here is that everyone must contribute. AND, how about that Fernando Tatis. Is he on track to becoming "Comeback Player of the Year?" Every year there is a hidden Gem and he appears to be a leading candidate.
One note I want to share is that on ESPN radio today, Peter Gammons was asked which of the two New York baseball teams he thought could go to the playoffs - without hesitation, he said the Mets as they were "the hottest team in baseball."
That, I may add is excellent kudos, considering the Mets were at the 40 degree below mark (Centigrade AND Fahrenheit -- kiddies, look up this stat and reference, you will be amazed) -- ice cold.
We'll catch up. The weekend is coming and we are tied with the Phils for first place. Did I just write that? Yes. Can I believe it? Why, uh, YES!

Catching the Phillies - and Other Perps
Mets are closer to the Phillies than ever before. Within the last 45 days, doom and gloom were the thematics being bandied about by fans (and the legions who were joining the ranks of ex-fans or hopelessly disenchanted).
But in this bizzaro world, the team has come together and not only is it mathematically possible, it is also attitudinely (man, is that a word?) probable.
It is always best to sit in second but in striking distance. Takes the pressure off and inspires better play. An example I can recall is circa 1993 when the Yankees and Blue Jays were going at it gang busters. No matter what the Jays did, they stayed in first, but the Yankees stayed pounding away. This is what the Mets need to do. It is probably best to break out of the catbird seat (hope I am using this phrase correctly) and then take the lead around mid-August.
Let's see what Omar has up his sleeve for the trade deadline. I have a feeling a big name will come east, but the key is not to deplete the farm.

All Star Roster --- WOW...Like a Shopping List...
Taking a break during the All Star Game and its amazing the players that are on the field. Some folks are watching to see who is superior, the AL or NL. I am watching it for scouting purposes -- NOT for fantasy baseball, but for reality baseball. Or, who I want to see on the Mets.
Let's try to grab Matt Holliday and perhaps a pitcher and first baseman for next year. It will also be interesting as the trading deadline is a mere two weeks away.
Speculation on who will be going where is probably coming in a subsequent blog post.
I am now waiting for David Wright to get into the game and, hopefully, seeing our Billy Wagner.
OH, for a wishlist of two middle relievers, let's take a look at Heath Bell and Octavio Dotel. Hmmmm....seems as these guys were wearing blue and orange a few years ago. Hell, if you can bring back Bobby Bonilla, these chaps are worth a shot.
Something in the "this can't be for real" department...A local blood organization which I donate regularly, will be offering Mets tix for an upcoming donation...AND the chance to win and autographed Bobby Bonilla baseball. I rather have a plain ball --- it's worth more.

All Star Break Ramblings...
Only one Met in the All Star classic. Ironic, huh? I am well aware that the voting closed awhile back, but just as the Mets gain the momentum, chaps like Jose Reyes don't make the team. And, for the record, it was like pulling teeth to get David Wright there.
As a young'un, I really used to love the summer classic. Where else could you see the best in one stadium. But, as time went on, the feeling got a bit diluted with the over-hyped and over-played interleague games. But, it was fun to watch Josh Hamilton sail a bunch over the fences.
Condolences to the family of Bobby Murcer. A class act all around.
Last night, I was at the Mets-Rockies game. Pelfrey was electric.

Let's Sweep The Rockies
So, with Sunday's schedule filling up on our end, I am writing this post in advance. Looking forward to the win tonight and sweeping Colorado. Apologies to my dear friends at Atrato (inside joke).
To reflect my confidence, I picked up Mike Pelfrey as a starter in my fantasy league for today.
He's been throwing heat. Since he tossed that mouthguard, his concentration is in the strike zone and not juggling some piece of plastic with 32 teeth.

The Tone Changes
So, I am a positive, upbeat person, but the way the Mets played early on this year, the only way to write about was to criticize, lament and try to prevent that tear from falling in your beer.
Today, the Mets took the Rockies again and extended their winning streak to 8. Hope is eternal. Delgado, whom I was willing to trade for a fungo bat and a few practice baseballs earlier in the year, has come around and is connecting. Fernando Tatis is the latest of Mets sensations which earlier in the year included Ryan Church and Angel Pagan. (side note, where IS Angel Pagan these days? Perhaps paling around with J.D. Salinger and Thomas Pynchon? No one has mentioned him at all of late save for "he's on the DL.:
The asset the Mets have is that the underheralded players, a la Damon Easely and the aforementioned chaps in the preceding paragraph all have the capability to turn the game around. That is what makes baseball exciting.
We have to see what is up with Pedro after today's game. And, tomorrow, it is Pelfrey, under the lights on the night game. (wonder if CowBell Man is going to be at the game tomorrow?)

Who would have ever bet the Mets would win seven in a row in May, must feel like a sage now. Tonight was a good, hard fought, low scorer - 2-1 against Colorado. Seems like Ollie Perez and Maine are eating the same cereal and drinking the same water. Lot of strikeouts, low runs, but also a lot of walks.

Nice W over the Giants...Barry Zito? Zee-WHO???
I had the chance to take in some of the game today, live, in-person. It was the day before my final day at my job and I decided that Shea would be my venue for my lunch Menu.
Maine, in my opinion was paradoxical. He had several strikeouts, but looked like he was struggling and he put a lot of homo sapiens on base by issuing 4 balls out of the strike zone.
A bit later, I had to leave. My supervisor called for a 4pm meeting, so I left in the bottom of the 5th. OH, when I got back to the office, the meeting was canceled, else I would have parked it in the blue seats at Shea. A special thanks to the unnamed guy who gave me an extra ticket he had when I got shooed away from sneaking into the Box area. Us die hard Mets fans watch out for each other.
A special Kudos to Fernando Tatis who is tattooing the ball. A guy I sat next to at the game today had a British accent. He used to live in the US and then moved back to his native UK, but told me he catches ALL the Mets games online. He said he wasn't too familiar with Tatis, but as I was about to leave, he told me he liked the way he played. Can't argue with that London Logic.
So, the word Streak can now be used in a positive way as the Mets put more than 5 Ws together. It is all a matter of time. It's not how fast you play in May, but where you end up in late September.

2 Straight Shutouts Against the Giants...SO, What is the Downside?
There isn't any! Mets are playing better all around. Pitching is out of the funk. Leads are being held and extra bases are being sought.
True, the Giants aren't exactly league-beaters, but, the momentum is important and confidence is being built up. (In the fan base too!).
Santana pitched great and finally got a decision. Let's go for the Sweep~

NOTE: According to RotoWire, Moises Alou is rehabbing well. Played a few innings and is going for a complete game in Binghamton. They also state: Spin: If Alou is able to remain healthy the next few days - which may be a feat all to itself - then he likely will be activated Friday.

Pelfrey - I Like-Y
So, Mike Pelfrey has turned me from a crusty curmudgeon "atheist" in his ability to a believer. A friend of mine, who used to do an occasional guest blog here (MAC) said to me last year, Pelfrey is legit. Wait. I did for a bit, but got tired (Jerseyites give about 10 seconds, TOPS!).In the last 5 starts, he brought it around. In a fantasy league I am in, I stupidly traded Tim Linceum early in the year making a bold prediction he would suffer a sophomore jinx. Some freakin sage I am, right? Well, I was going to pick up Pelfrey for a spot start tonight, but surmised it would be a loss against the Mighty Tim.
Pelfrey put up some good numbers, didn't issue a BB and had 7 shutout innings. Plus, the team knocked the ball around including Argenis Reyes (pictured) with his first hit. For those who saw the broadcast, the ball was rolled back to the dugout, grabbed by Fernando Tatis (Yes, an HR tonight!) and he faked a toss into the crowd with a dummy ball.
Giants don't have much of an offense, but their mound presence is strong. Should be a good series. Just 1 1/2 games out. Don't ever discount the Mets -- NOT EVER.

How Do You Squander a 10-1 Lead?
BOX SCORE -- As I start this entry, we are in the bottom of the 9th. Wagner put the first man on, then the second and struck out Ryan Howard -- who hit a Jeffrey Maier assisted type Home Run earlier.
Pedro pitched brilliantly. The score was 10-1.
A series of runs (not Mets) begin crossing the plate.
Back to Wagner. two outs, two strikes...simple scenario expected, right? No. Base hit up the middle which Wagner seemed to refuse to deflect and two runs score. A sloppy win, but its a win and the Mets squeak 3 of 4 from the Phillies.
For the first time since June 5, the team is over .500 (45-44) - Thanks to SNY for the stat.
I guess the name for an apropos TV show would be "Survivor" for the Mets. Narrowly staying on.

Waiting at the DMV Can Now Be a Pleasant Experience...
Today was a "Perfect Storm" of sports events. But, all seemed to run long time wise beyond expectations.
Wimbledon started and was stopped by two rain delays. (I tuned into a little of that).
Track and Field Championships for the US Olympic team caught my eye.
Tour de France (as a cycler, I envy these bikes..WOW)
And, the Mets...
What a long, entertaining, spine-tingling, spellbinding affair. Ollie Perez was Brilliant! (YES, I said that!) and I think he finally has his confidence back to pitch tough against a tough team and hold them to only 1 run.
Beltran's stick was stellar. Reyes was spot on with the acrobatic defense.
But, Wagner, Oh My. Did he put us through the hoops. 2 Out. 2 Strikes in the 9th. Up by two...then BOOM. A tie.
I have to add here, that in a spirit of serendipity, I fell asleep on the couch during part of the rain delay. I woke up, no lie, just as the first pitch was about to be thrown. Chalk one up for efficiency.
So, as the game was tied, we were running out of players and pitchers. I immediately thought of that Bugs Bunny episode where he was stranded on an island with 2 matches. Well, Tatis, the man who hit two grannies in an inning back in '99 pulled through again. It is nice to see another #17 (Kudos to Keith Hernandez) hitting and winning.
Two down, we gave the Phils one and Monday its ours to take 3.

Awesome Come From Behind vs. First Place Phillies
See? The Mets DO have a good team full of hustle.
Admiration. Pride. Guts. That's what the fans need more of and the team will pull though. Honestly, after Ryan Howard tied the game with that monster 3-run HR, I thought the home field advantage would be the catalyst for the Phillies.
This is a good chance to rebound. The division is weak, so, the Mets aren't out of the running.
Lotta personnel in the game, but glad we pulled through....Sunday, away. (Wish it was Sunday Home so I could visit). Two more games in the series. I smell a 3-1 record.

Pelfrey - Impressive
Watching Mike Pelfrey tonight against the Cardinals has a calming effect.
Throught five innings, 55 pitches and a 9-0 lead.
Ball seems to be groovin in and consistently hitting between 90-93 mph.
He's turning to be an asset vs. a liability. That's what baseball is all about.
Happy 4th. Back tomorrow. Santana is pitching. Phils. Need to sweep these mustardpretzelcheesesteakers.

Little Rain Delay
Mets were gaining some nice mometum against the Cards, and then - BOOM. Rain.
There's talk about Alou coming off the DL (AGAIN). Let's hope this is the last time. Alou is an excellent contact hitter, but he's never around. Let's get realistic if he has to get "Listed" again and find a healthy player (AHEM! Matt Holliday will be available next year).
Remember, we don't want Alou to be our drawn out version of --- Mike Hampton.

Tony Armas Junior -- Shemp? Zeppo?
Tony Armas Jr. pitched a good game tonight and the Mets have another contender in the pitching conundrum...Unlike a few years ago, the starting 5 seem to be rotating a bit and that fifth guy seems to be a different player.
Some have done well (Nelson Figueroa for his early starts) and some have done bad (Jorge Sosa). It seems to be an open audition, but we need to get someone ready for the show.

Perez and Delgado Shut Me Up Today -- And I Am Grateful
As you may have inkled (that is past tense for an inkling) in several recent posts, I have gone postal over the performances of Ollie Perez and Carlos Delgado. Let's face it, the reasons have been legit, but I don't write for the sole purpose of bashing, but rather a personal analysis, color commentary and a bit of mystery tossed in.
So, today, I buckled my seat belt upon taking my seat (incidentally, I "walked" down a bit -- a few rows closer.
The place was packed and there was a good rivalry. But, you always get nervous with Perez. He was nothing short of brilliant. 8Ks, 0BB and 7 Innings....seems Koufax-like numbers, but I am not set to anoint ""46" as the next "32." Ollie didn't panic. And you could sense it. There was only 1 time where it looked like the Yankees would tie it up, but he kept his cool. Kept the pitching white-hot.
Delgado has been on fire. Another HR...I think I have seen maybe 6 of these in person.
What a thrill to beat the Yankees. On our grass. In our house. Which will be a flat land, eerily taken away by -- not eminent domain - but always remembered. And, the sandman, Ole Billy Wagner, shut em down.

Tommy, This Was For You
OK. I'm not happy the Mets lost, but it was kind of ironic that the Mets were playing the Yankees on June 28.
Four years ago, June 28, 2004 at around 3:30 p.m., I lost a good friend, a rival sports fan (he loved the Yankees, me, the Mets) and a true beacon in my life, My Uncle Tommy.
He was a Yankee fan as a kid and even saw Babe Ruth play. But, he's not with us anymore. We would have been going back and forth about the teams if we watched these subway series together...Well, Tommy, I miss ya big time, but your team got the win, congrats. I hope you watched the game with your Yankee Idols in the sky.
That win was for you Tommy. It's a big sacrifice for me to say that, but you gave a lot out of your life to me and this is your "W"

Trounce The Yanks On Their Turf
Today was the first time this year I went 'cross town to the rivals' Yankees house and I must say, a friend and I were treated to a great game. Originally, this was slated for a Friday in May, but was rained out.
Mets were nothing short of brilliant. I have been rough, tough and salty on Delgado, but today, he had a very good day. 2 Hrs (one a granny, one a 3-run and doubled in 2 to give him 9RBI.

In essence, the Mets of today were like the Mets of 05, 06 and early 07 - run scoring machines.
Tonight, the second part of the day-night doubleheader, they are being shut out in the 7th. Boys, I hope that rally happens.
Well, on to Sunday, where I will be back at Shea and I just saw that --- GULP ---- Ollie Perez is pitching.
Not that I root against him, but he's consistent..that is, unpredictable. That's what we KNOW - but we don't know the outcome. All I ask is that Ollie has a break-out like Delgado.
Incidentally, Michael Kay on ESPN Radio was saying that Delgado's efforts today was a result of Major League pitching gone diluted.

Random Met - Greg McMichael
Hard to believe its been 10 years since Greg McMichael was on the Mets.
Seems like he was a human yo-yo in the trade wars..take a look at this:
April 16, 1991: Signed as a Free Agent with the Atlanta Braves.

Wright Rights The Ship Against The Mariners

Is it me, or is it odd that the Mets have trouble against the bad teams, but play the good teams well?
Well, time to get ready for the Subway series...I am heading to Yankee Stadium for the Friday afternoon game, then coming home and watching the night portion of the day/night double header. Oh, and returning to Shea on Sunday too!

Mariners Sink Mets
This loss was on par to the Titanic, General Slocum and the Sultana as far as sinking goes. 11-0 loss to the lowly Mariners.
I'm too sick to even include the box score. What if one day, long after we are all gone, archivists look for it. I don't want to be cited or associated with a loss such as this.
Mets need to hire a movie director who can go up and down the 25 man roster and yell "CUT!!! CUT!!!" Hope they point to Delgado, Heilman, and, oh, yes, a new fave, Ollie Perez. I am afraid to fathom how many losses their combined stats and efforts put the Mets in this quicksand.
I'm still a fan. I survived the badball of the 90s. I have missed only about 5 games on TV (traveling internationally) since 2006...Will Shawn Green come out of retirement? Will the Mets have a new first baseman next year?
I am slated to go to 2 of the 4 subway series games this coming weekend. Just hope I get a chance to use my lungs in a positive way.

Pitchers on Bad Teams Hitting Grand Slams Against Santana??? No. You Are NOT on LSD
So, if you take a close look at the box score and see Felix Hernandez' line you will note what looks to be a picket fence: 1 1 1 and then an ominous "4" at the far right.
How does something like this happen? Mariners have a bad enough record as it is, but Santana grooved on and Hernandez made him the bug while he became the windshield and chased 3 ducks off the sack.
Let's talk about irony here for a sec. The Seattle Mariners have been around since 1977 and Hernandez is the FIRST pitcher to clock an HR...This also comes on the 37th anniversary of Rick Wise pitching a no hitter AND hitting two home runs in the same game...and the LAST AL pitcher to hit a grand slam was Steve Dunning who accomplished the feat in 1971 against the A's on May 11, 1971 Box Score...Finally, in Jim Bouton's classic book, Ball Four, he talks about a pitcher that hit an inside the park grand slam home run (if I recall correctly). A reporter asked him after the game what his thoughts were and he said he didn't like it because (tongue in cheek), "it put pressure on all the rest of the pitchers on the team to hit inside the park grand slams." Oh, the pitcher in question who hit it? Mel Stottlemyre who was in the Seattle dugout tonight.

A tune of the 1960s (The Name Game, recorded by Shirley Ellis) has that perpetual chorus and that is what we seem to be hearing nearly a week after the dismissal of the beloved/(be-hated***? - depending who you ask) Willie Randolph.
George Vescey has an interesting column in today's New York Times worth a gander: "The Blame Game"
Regardless, I loved Willie, but he is gone. We have to give Jerry the respect he deserves as skipper and support him to win. We must remember the old adage, "The King is Dead, Long Live the King."
NOTES: Good win today for the Mets, 3-1 over the Rockies. Interestingly, these two teams were the ones who epitomized two words last year: Ascent and Nadir. The Mets, though it has been drilled many times, took a downward skid, and the Rockies had their 15 minutes of fame (stretched out over a 20+ Win in a shade over 20+ games in the home stretch. And, both teams are shells of themselves. Baseball is a game of changes...that's what makes it wonderful.
Light schedule tomorrow, but Santana is pitching...Always worth the price of admission...

The Pedro Implosion
Just when I thought Pedro was grooving it in there, the score became 6-1 and Senor Martinez was strolling to the bench after being pulled.
A sign of things going wrong? When Ubaldo Jimenez (Footnote - it is pronounced different than what my friends and enemies call ME - "you Bald-o") who was 0-for-34+ got two hits in the game. (see box score) - That, is something that should NOT happen.
Momentum is up despite being down 6-1 now as I write in the lower 7th.

Another day, another job opening. But, this is not for a slot at McDonalds, but rather at the helm of an MLB dugout.
The Mariners, (Jhon Maclaren) and the Blue Jays (John Gibbon) and our beloved Metropolitans have replaced skippers. When you think of it, that is 10% of the entire teams are cutting their managerial force. Jack Welch must be proud. He espoused the idea of cutting 10% of a business every year.
How far reaching is this? Well, the following article by David Lengel of the UK's Guardian covered it. Since when is the UK interested in baseball? My view, the more the merrier!

Tonight's game looks good...Mets are up 6-2 in the 5th. Interesting stat just came...Tonight, after 72 games, this is only the SECOND HR hit by a left fielder, and, this is coming from Trot Nixon, a newbie on the team. Hmmmm...Isn't the outfield supposed to be laden with power hitters? Speaking of, Nixon, it's ironic there is also a Castro. Somehow, I feel like its a Jeopardy!game... Heads of state for .300 please.
I'm happy the way they are playing tonight. Season can still be salvaged. So, my note to a certain reader is... "Believe, BB!, Believe!"

Time for a Random Met -- Dave Telgheder
No game today, so let's have some fun and take a blast from the past with none other than former Mets hurler. Dave Telgheder Stats
Dave was with us 3 years, most notably in 1994 when he pitched in 24 games and finished the year with a 6-2 record with a 4.76 ERA. His role was limited the next two years and signed on as a free agent with the Oakland A's, and spent 3 years in Oakland before fading out of baseball. He signed with the Indians in 1999, but never made it back to the show.
How many of you out there remember Dave? Many people pronounced his last name as Tail-Gaiter. If there are any die hard fans with a Telgheder shirt, let me know!
Last I heard he was doing some announcing for a minor league team on Cable TV.

Will the Manuel Era Be Run By the Manual?
Mets Manager, Jerry Manuel.
I dunno. I have a hard time getting used to it. It just doesn't have a euphonious sound. It seems as if you have to stumble to say it.
In any event, the first pitch of game 2 of his career is about to be thrown and I am wondering, pondering, contemplating, much like a philosophy student does, why I remain a Mets fan. There is NO way I will change despite these bumps and bruises.
Naturally a new style will be brought to the dugout. Manuel had success with the White Sox. Then again, so did Jeff Torborg and what did HE do for the Mets. Managerial Record
Last night, Reyes got in a to-do with Manuel after the first AB. I just hope things improve.
OH, on a funny note, Steve Somers of WFAN (www.wfan.com) tonight kept wailing that the Mets have to get rid of Carlos Delgado. Odd?

Changing of the Guard
So must for prognostications (see my previous post's title).
I was shocked when I heard the news, but not surprised. Seems like the media had the pressure to get some shakeup in the Mets org.
I can see firing Peterson. No question he is a good coach. But, he was allegedly responsible in the past for getting rid of Scott Kazmir and predicting he could get Victor (Where The Hell Is He Now?) Zambrano straightened out within 10 minutes. Middle and late relief has been folding. Tom Nieto? First Base coach canned? OK. Not much of a loss.
But I have one suggestion since we are cleaning house and starting a new regime. And, this makes a ton of sense.
Get rid of the freakin' bat boy too!
Let's see what this shake up does. Right now, I am not seeing players walk on water as they are losing to the Angels 4-1 in the top of the fourth.

Willie Is Still With Us - Who Else Will Be?
There was an email I received from a colleague today and the story was such that ownership of the Mets gave Omar Minaya the carte blanche to jettison some of the coaches on Willie's staff. Does this bode for a turnaround? I don't think so, but to my gut instinct, the word scapegoat comes to the fore. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/06/16/mets.coaches/
What I am trying to figure out is why Rick Down was fired. Sure, he wasn't a superstar player, but a man who understood the mechanics of the swing and could quickly analyze and fine tune a players swing. The end result was an elevation of their ability.
A caller on WFAN the other day had an interesting point. Since Rick Peterson may be on the hook for the middle relief implosion, why not hire Leo Mazzone. He did wonders with the Braves. (Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, Avery etc...). But that same colleague is opposed and said there is a Braves-Mets stigma. Maybe, but I rather have Leo Mazzone in my circle of friends.
Oprah had her makeovers, we need a Coach-over. (and a few other players may benefit with different zip codes)

Let's Play Two - Rangers
The legendary Ernie Banks loved baseball so much, he was quoted as saying, "Let's Play Two."
Today the Mets did just that. And, instead of embarrassing themselves like they have in previous weeks, the games came together.
Despite losing the first, the Metropolitans rallied back strong to come within just one run. As a long time fan, this is what we want to see, rather than laying down.
In game 2, Martinez looked good and seems to have his command back. Beltran was hitting, and nothing can be better when the stars gel and knock the hide with the wooden stick.
Let's take a moment here and think of the Mets as being like the stock market during the dot-com bubble. High. Low. Drastically high. Drastically low. As long as it evens out to playoffs, this is what we should care about.

A Sigh Of Relief
Short post tonight. Tired. Long work week.
But it was nice to see both Pelfrey and Perez, two guys I have been critical of (I don't dislike them) had very good games this week, as did Santana. Ironically, Perez pitched well and so did the bullpen.
There was some good hustle in the game. A routine grounder to the Texas 1B, Chris Shelton wound up as a batter reaching base rather than slogging down to first. My coaches always yelled "RUN IT OUT!!!!" and that makes sense. Box Score
Saw a crawl on the screen saying the Mets got Trot Nixon. He was a player showing tons of potential when he was a rookie. Perhaps he can be a good player and contribute. The transaction says it was for cash and a player to be named later. I will name that player I want out NOW... Aaron Heil _ _ _ (see if you can guess the missing letters, man).
Let's keep in mind, the Mets team needs to ALL play like starters, not fill-ins.
AND, on a sad note. A personal tribute to Tim Russert. As serious as he is on politics, he often called in on the NYC sports radio shows and showed a good, fun, passionate sports fan side. Tim, I'm gonna miss ya!

Can A Psychic Figure out What is Going On With the Mets?
I had the opportunity today to score two tickets to the Mets-Diamondbacks game and was all keyed up for a much needed sojourn from the office.
Beautiful day. Seats in the shade. A good friend / professional colleague who I haven't seen in awhile. Good conversation at the ready.
First seven innings is like artwork. Santana, flawless. Chalked up 10 strikes, issued only 3 hits, 3 walks and the Mets were putting a few numbers up on the board.
And then it happened. That dreaded pitch count philosophy. It is akin to saying, "we'll only make this top spin 100 times, despite the fact it may be in a groove and still look good spinning, but we don't want it to spin too much. Santana got the hook from fisherman Willie and then the chaos started. Joe Smith, a sidearmer I admire, put two runs on the board for the Diamondbacks. That was OK. Mets were still up 4-2. But, there was one point when the Mets had 3 men on, no out and could not execute the simple act of getting a human being to traverse the basepath a mere 30 yards to touch the plate for that comfy run.
So, Schoenweiss comes in for a cup of coffee, 1/3 inning and then when the ball is handed to Billy Wagner, it came apart at the seems. He imploded. The crowd was stunned. We were like Hiroshima / Nagasaki observers -- and couldn't do anything about it. Game is tied, and a bit of optimism was emoted when a few reached base. Alas. (say it as if you are reading Shakespeare), it was not to be.
So, what happens to the artwork that Santana painted? Aaron Heilman. The Flushing Queens version of Lazlo Toth (go ahead, click the link and look him up -- it makes the image more cerebral) struck and it was all over.
Heilman, who is 0-3 - before I ever finish that sentence, I want to know what/why/how he is staying here.
More fun coming up for the Mets. Now we have to figure out a way to play the Texas Rangers -- if it is tough playing teams you know, imagine what must transpire to take on Josh Hamilton, David Murphy and Milton Bradley of the Texas Rangers.
My advice? Fasten your seat-belts and have a ChAIRsick bag nearby.

Roughed The Diamonds
What a see-saw and emotional game.

What hard luck...You know in the 9th, when the pitch hit Reynolds and it was not called a BB, I was relieved and said out loud - That break went our way. What happens next? BOOM, a smack over the fence and tied it up.
Beltran finally came through with a nice 2 Run HR...Mets only came from behind on 5 wins this year. A stat which I alluded to in the past, but the Mets need to start making this a practice.

Pitching 101 - Not a Primer - Just a Wonder Why....
"pitch count" is the big obsession these days.
John Maine was going well tonight and then they pull him due to a pitch count. He hit 101. Big deal. That is one throw for each Dalmatian if you want to look at it. That's not bad. Tossing a ball 101 times can't be that taxing. If it were, please explain all the complete games the "old timers" threw - and these workhorses pitched for years and despite the lack of good equipment, conditioning, technology, and the excess of their vices (smoking, etc.) these guys were iron men with rubber arms.
Steve Somers on WFAN had a good point tonight during the rain delay. Why pull a pitcher at all when they are doing well and have momentum going? What will an extra 10 pitches do? The only thing that should be taxed are cigarettes, not a players arm.
Mets are tied now after leading. I'm going to grit my teeth. The Mets were playing well...let's hope Willie and Rick Peterson reevaluate some of this obsession with hitting 101.

Monday off should help the Mets. They are about to face one of the toughest teams out there in the Diamondbacks.
I heard a stat the other day that said the cross town rivals, the Yankees, won something like their last 9 of 11 games coming from behind. This is what is missing from the Mets. From 2005-7, there was always a feeling the Mets could come back.
The team needs to learn 1) How to hold a lead. 2) How to come back from a deficit.
Play a little more hustleball and check the tudes at the door.

Oliver Perez is Pitching Tonight - So That Means...
BUCKLE UP! It may be a rough ride.
A good friend, D.G. is a long time Pirates fan and he always points out that Oliver Perez was a "throw in" when the Mets traded Xavier Nady for that broken down, much traveled Roberto Hernandez.
The Mets really need to fish or cut bait with Perez. If he continues to disappoint, the morale of the team will surely suffer.
I heard a caller on the radio today say that "if you give Perez enough time, he can give up 13 hits and walk 10 in 3 innings."
With that, I am going to watch the game and be patient.

Leave it to Schoenweis to Finally Emerge and Blow it.
I dunno...It felt like the aura of John Franco was in the stadium last night. Bad team. Bases loaded, tie game and Scott Schoenweis - who, in his defense, has been stellar lately, but mostly, since donning the colors of blue and orange has been, just, well, average.
So, what does he do? His throw merely was a Plink to the batter and the winning run scores. See Story
I had to overdose on Alka Seltzer and Brioschi to tame the nerves in the stomach.
NOTE: This Video of Schoenweis Killing It is not for the faint of heart. Keep the smelling salts nearby.
OH, in my humble opinion, he belongs on the previously cited New Orleans Safari.

Shopping List...Outfielders - Future Mets
Anyone who knows me know I am a big fan of Diamondbacks outfielder, Eric Byrnes. Partly because of his irreverent wit he displays on The Best Damn Sports Show Period and also for the way he hustles at bat, on the base paths, in the field. He reminds me of the Charlie Hustle and the Brett Butlers of the world.
He would bring a big lift to the club house. Take a look at what his manager said:
He beat me to the park today," manager Bob Melvin said. "He's running around like a chicken with his head cut off, trying to create as much of a stir as he can. He can't sit still. He's in the clubhouse. I'm sure he's on the concourse running around during a game."
There are some Mets who are on the current roster, plus a few on the farm that would be perfect to package and send.
Well, the game against the Padres just started, so I am going to retire from the blog scene tonight and root for the Metropolitans.

Shrinking the Giants
On a rare day where I worked from home, I had a chance to see the Mets-Giants game. (For my supervisors and folks that sign my W-2, it was on in the background and I glanced over every now and then. Sadly, this is true.
Maine pitched a good game and seemed to have control. Reyes 2008 is getting to be Reyes of 2007 -- getting on base consistently.
Matt Cain is a tough pitcher. How tough? For a rightie, something like 120+ innings passed before anyone stole a base. I wish Reyes did it against him, but he did it to his counterpart, K. Yabu.
Momentum seems to be picking up. There are approximately 100 games left in the season and all that hullabaloo (gees, hope that last word gets through spell check) about firing Willie Randolph seems to have faded away. And that's a good thing.

Could You Imagine This Pitching Line-Up?
As the last few blog posts have been not dainty on Oliver Perez, here's another thought to ponder.
Can you imagine if the Mets did indeed win the Barry Zito Lottery (I would think winning a lottery via email is a bit more credible - and, YIELDING -- SOMETHING!)
What would the fans be like with his current 1-8 record with over 5.00 ERA and 1.75 WHIP? Add Perez into that...
Taking a short look, the combined #'s would be as follows... (prior to game)
- Starts - 24
- Wins - 5
- Loses -12
- Hits - 126
- Runs - 85
- Earned Runs - 73
- Innings - 118.1
- ERA - 5.56
WHIP - 1.69
Now the fun part..
- Walks - 74
- K's - 82
Doesn't this make you more eager to get up to go to work tomorrow? Perez is making $6.5 m and Zito, $14.5m - $21m when combined. Its like robbing a bank.

Sunday Night Baseball -- In PERSON!
I was a bit miffed when they moved the Sunday afternoon game to Sunday night. Usually at that time, I'm winding down and getting ready for work the next day, but last night, all the elements came together.
The night was beautiful. Sitting in the upper deck, the wind was nice the air was clean and the Mets played some stellar baseball under Johan Santana. Box Score
It was also his 100th career Win! See AP Story
The magic was there and the team rallied with 5 runs in one inning. After Ryan Church his is dinger, the place went mad chanting "RYAN CHURCH!!! RYAN CHURCH!!!!"
Tonight, Monday, is well, not going well.
After traveling cross coasts, the Mets are under Oliver Perez who just gave up a ton of runs in 1/3 of an inning.
What is interesting, as I check it now, his ownership in the ESPN leagues is around 63% -- and its up 10% today as typical of a daily starter. But what I want to see tomorrow is what it will drop to. If any of these ESPN players are smart (full disclosure, I dumped him a LONG time ago). My prediction - a bold one - is he will dip below 40%. People have wised up.
I don't understand why Willie would leave him in after 4 runs scored, especially with 1/3 inning completed.

If I Could Be a Travel Agent, Some Folks Would Get Free Trips to New Orleans....
So, here I am thinking, on a beautiful sunny Sunday before I leave for the Mets - Dodgers Game (8pm) if I were a travel agent, what would I do that would most benefit the .... METS.
Well, I just did a check and the flights from LaGuardia to New Orleans start at $323 and go to $583.
The departure date is June 2, and the return is November 1.
Here is the flight list:
Aaron Heilman
Carlos Delgado
Mike Pelfrey
and, Maybe, Carlos Beltran (who needs to hustle more and show a good attitude.
This would be a carry your own luggage and make your own agenda when you hit the Big Easy.
OK, now that's out of the way, Let's Go Mets! Santana, I am looking forward to a dazzling performance. (And, I don't have to hear Joe Morgan tonight!)
