Thrilled to death the season is starting. I am watching the Yankees-Red Sox game as I am writing this - but don't call me a traitor. Not hopping on any bandwagons. I'm a dyed (Blue and Orange) in the wool Mets fan through and through.
The reality is, we are going to have a tough year. Omar sat and fiddled while great deals burned about him. (Instead we are getting burned with D-List - a la Kathy Griffin - caliber players). Jason Bay is going to be a welcome addition, but he won't carry the team. Reyes. Beltran. Murphy - all question marks of what and when.
I see the pundits are putting the Amazins at third or fourth. Pitching would be the linchpin that are going to move us. And, before I start ranting, Omar, please, get rid of Perez. I heard on WFAN that at least 10 teams would be interested in him - save for that Stimlus-like salary package. If he starts to slide, time to move him. Personally, I would watch out for the Nationals. They did a lot of rebuilding with some good lunchpail players.
Going to go out on a limb here -- Eric Byrnes will be Comeback Player of the Year. Omar, you could have had him cheap. But, as Ralph Kramden, of Honeymooners fame said, "What do I know, I'm just a blogger."
And, speaking of, I am glad to be back blogging for my beloved team!

Logic Defied - Logic Defined? As Archie Bunker Would Say...."WHATEVER"
When you have a hard time beating the worst team (Nationals) and then come back and whoop the best (or one of them - Marlins) with a 1-hitter from your starter who was having a boat load of trouble, then you have the consider that this is the conundrum of baseball.
(The Nationals and last year's World Series Champs staged a 13-11 battle tonight as well).
Bright spot was in Omir Santos' granny. That helped propel confidence.
A good friend of mine had an idea...to do a shake-up...not sure I fully agree, but, here goes...Cliff Lee (P, Indians) for Daniel Murphy, Ramon Castro and two others. I like Lee....love Murphy.
The pitching definitely is still a question mark despite Maine's performance. It isn't as strong as the Milwaukee Braves duo in the 40s/50s...Spahn and Sain (then pray for rain)...we can't (yet) say Santana and Maine (then pray for rain).
On another note - an actual reader of this blog had a bit of a mini gripe (all in fun) that I slammed #47 (Glavine and Fossum - no, don't go back to the Spahn / Sain thing...these two are far from it)...He gently brought up that he wore #47 in Pop Warner football and kept it through college during intramurals. Lord, forgive me for sullying a number. (Glavine and Fossum STILL suck no matter what letter, number or symbol are on their back. My friend in Pop Warner, well, he admits he was no star either).

Mets' Youth is Answer to Their Woes

I'm taking a day off from writing today (can't stomach it after seeing the Mets pen give up 6 runs today to the lowly Pirates). I dispatched a long time business colleague and fellow Mets fan to utter some logic in this time of bullpen confusion.

Okay, so the Mets didn't sweep the Marlins on Sunday. [Editors Note: Nor did they play up to the level of the Sisters of Charity "B" team against the Pirates on Monday in a make-up game].
We have to give Josh Johnson a lot of credit. He is a big time pitcher although he's still relatively inexperienced. It's a waste of time to analyze Pelfrey's performance since the Mets' bats did nothing to keep pace with the offensively-charged Marlins.
Going back to Game 2 of this series, Murphy and Evans were nothing short of awesome. It is always exciting to see our young talent get called up in August and September every season. Two years ago, Mike Jacobs hit 10 HRs in something like his first 100 ABs. He's a jerk anyway, especially with what he did to Brian Stokes who got his first major league hit in as many ABs -- Jacobs tossed the ball over the Mets dugout and into the stands. Delgado and Mets officials needed to act fast to get the ball back. This was no accident -- the Marlins team was angered by a stong start by the Mets in which they scored four runs in the first inning.
Anyway, back to the young Mets talent. Another minor leaguer who has been getting some blog buzz is Valentino Pascucci who has hit 25 HRs this season for the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA).
Val Pascucci should be starting in LF for the Mets. Evans should split time with Tatis in RF and Daniel Murphy should be starting every game for the Mets at second base (he played 3B in the minors and should be able to make the switch) while Castillo continues his rehab. I don't want to ever see Damion Easley start a game for the Mets. He should always be used for PH.
Here is what the Mets lineup needs to look like if they are to challenge the Phillies and take the NL East:
Note: I left Argenis Reyes off the list since he hasn't shown enough power and hitting ability. Murphy should be getting the time there. After all, Murphy has a .500 batting average. As for Nick Evans, he started slow batting .179 on July 12, but has been on a hot streak and is now hitting at a healthy .263.
In terms of pitching, the Mets need to bring up southpaw pitcher Jonathan Niese NOW. His ERA at New Orleans is 2.37. (FYI -- Brian Stokes' ERA at AAA is 4.41). He needs to come up ASAP along with teammate Tony Armas who is sporting a 2.54 ERA.
The Mets' future is bright but only if they can embrace the future and give these young kids a shot.
